What is an ESA Letter?

An ESA letter is a legal document that informs your landlord of your need for an emotional support animal. This letter grants you certain rights:

Housing Accommodations: Even if your apartment complex has a no-pet policy, you can keep your emotional support animal in your home with an ESA letter. An ESA is not a pet so you don’t have to pay extra pet fees, deposits, and face other restrictions. However, please keep in mind you are liable for any damages that your ESA may do to property or persons. And don’t let your animal dirty things up or scare people.

The Process: Easy, clear, and without stress.

At My ESA MD, you don’t have to pull of a feat like climbing Dog mountain to get your ESA letter. Here’s a glimpse a our hassle-free process:

1. Initial Consultation: Contact us through the website or call us at 833-372-6311. We will either get you through to one of our licensed medical doctors via phone right away, or we can schedule a telehealth appointment for later for you at your convenience.
2. Comprehensive Assessment: You will then speak to one of our doctors about your specific situation and symptoms during your telehealth visit. Our doctor will explain howan emotional support animal can help you with your specific situation and the  symptoms that you are experiencing. Through this process you will receive a genuine ESA letter that is tailored to your circumstances.
3. Receive Your ESA Letter: Once approved, you will get your ESA letter quickly usually within an hour or less. This document can be used to officially and legally notify landlords, airlines, and other relevant parties that you require an emotional support animal.
4. Ongoing Support: We do not stop there when you get your ESA letter. We are here to help you in the future and to assist you as your requirements and situation changes. Sometimes dorm leaders or landlords have questions. We will speak to them directly on your behalf if needed.

Flying With Your ESA: The Air Carrier Access Act

Unfortunately, U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a new rule in December 2020 which limited the use of Emotional Support Animals in air travel.

Some owners were negligent and some passengers got bit, (an example of why we must all be mindful with our ESAs.)

Now the Air Carrier Access Act, or the ACAA only recognizes service animals as having special and unlimited access to air travel. These are dogs that are trained to perform a specific task or tasks that are related to the person’s disability. An example of this would be a service dog that has been trained to alert its handler who is diabetic that his or her blood sugar level has gone high. Service animals are still able to fly in the main cabin without charge with their owner.

However, emotional support animals are no longer allowed this same access. But it doesn’t mean they can’t fly.. ESA owners are required to follow the pet policies that are in place for the airline they are using. This may include paying a pet travel fee and making sure that your ESA is kept in a carrier during the flight. Your ESA might even have to travel in cargo.

What is a Psychiatric Service Animal?

(PSAs) can fly without these limitations. A PSA is a dog that has been trained to perform a specific task that is helpful for specific disabilities. These PSAs have not lost their flying rights from airlines like the ESAs. If you qualify for a PSA and your animal is operating as one, we can write a letter to that effect. (Not everyone qualifies and we are honest in our assessment.)

Get Your ESA Letter from a Doctor

In the age of quick solutions and online certificates, presenting an ESA letter from a licensed medical doctor can be more credible

Landlords, hotels and other organizations are more likely to accept an ESA or PSA letter from a legitimate healthcare provider rather than a certificate from a random website.

An ESA letter from a medical doctor increases the credibility of your letter and protects your rights. It gives your ESA the respect and recognition it deserves.

Personalized Evaluation: Our doctors will always take the time to listen to your individual case, which allows them to write a letter personalized to you.

Legal Protection: A genuine ESA letter protect you under the Fair Housing Act and ensure that you are allowed to live with your emotional support animal without any complications. Our doctors also ensure that all our patients are protected to the utmost extent of the law.

If that means we have to report some landlords to HUD for violating patients’ rights or testify in court for our patients, we do what is necessary to ensure that patients get the care they need. If we have to speak to a landlord or a dorm manager, we will.
